In the late 1970s Roger Troutman continued to record with his brothers, losing the name Roger & The Human Body and adopting the Zapp nickname from his brother Terry in 1977. Their own label allowed Troutman and the band to give a slightly wider and more high-profile release of their own music, issuing their first (and only) album Introducing Roger in 1976. Particularly influential in the electro subgenre of funk, Zapp were known for their trademark use of the talk-box effect. What James Jamerson did for the bass, Jimi Hendrix for the guitar, and Stevie Wonder for the harmonica, Troutman did for the vocoder. Innovative funkster Roger Troutman was the master of the vocoder - a keyboard synthesizer that created robotic-sounding vocals through the simultaneous use of a piano-like interface and a breath controller (breath tube), somewhat like a guitar talk box. The latter album did not produce any hits, but it does feature a handful of appealing songs that are closer to mellow modern soul than funk Г la Zapp's 'I Can Make You Dance.' The earlier album features 'Your Thing Is Your Thing,' a Top 40 R&B single. This Funky Town Grooves release combines the Thomas brothers' Something New (1983) and Gonna Have Big Fun (1984), both of which were recorded at Troutman Sound Labs and bear the unmistakable Zapp/Troutman synth-funk stamp. One of the more obscure `80s funk acts from Dayton, OH, New Horizons nonetheless benefited from the assistance of the Troutman family (Roger, Larry, Robert, and Terry) and a deal with Columbia.
